Weils Disease

Rats have the potential to pass on Weil’s disease to humans, therefore a rat infestation can not only be damaging to your property it can be a severe health risk for you. Leptospirosis, also known as Weil’s disease and Rat Catcher’s Yellows, is caused by infection with bacteria of the genus Leptospira and affects humans as well as other mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. The infection is caught mainly through contact with an infected animals urine, this will be mainly from rodents like rats, or cattle or pigs. It is generally caught through contaminated water and typically enters the body through cuts or the lining of the nose, mouth, throat or eyes. Weil’s disease, although very rare in the UK, can be fatal.
