Phorid Flies

There are many different species of phorid flies, but can be distinguished by their small hump-back like bodies. They resemble fruit flies at quick glance and are tiny in size, ranging from just 0.5 mm to 6 mm in length. They are also different from other fly families by the way they prefer to escape, running rapidly across a surface rather than take to flight. Their colours range from yellowish to a dark brown or black appearance. They can be commonly found around moist decaying matter but can also be found anywhere around the house. A female phorid fly can lay up to 100 eggs at a time and usually around 700-800 in her lifetime. It takes around 25 days from egg to adult with a period of between 8-16 days feeding before moving on to a dry location to pupate in to an adult.
