Pharaohs Ants

The Pharaoh ant is one of the most common species of ants to infest homes and businesses in london. They are approximately 2 mm long, yellowish brown with a brown abdomen, with the males measuring slightly longer in length at 3 mm long. The queen Pharaoh ant is 3.5 to 6 mm long, dark red in colour with wings and they have black eyes and 2 small segments at the pedicel. They leave well defined trails which are often associated with heating systems.Pharaohs ants likes to feed indoors on high protein foods like meat, fats, blood and dead insects etc. New colonies are often formed through nests that have been disturbed, for example as a result of a spray treatment for another insect. Each queen produces up to 35000 eggs in its lifetime and nest locations are usually in cavities in heated buildings. They are often found in london hospitals, high rise flats and large office blocks. Pharaohs ants are well organised and structured creatures, their colonies can range from a few dozen to 300,000 individuals.
